    Know your state's rules

    Minimum coverage requirements

Every state but New Hampshire requires liability insurance, but the minimum limits vary widely — and are rarely enough to cover a serious crash.

    Check your state's minimums

    No-fault vs. at-fault

12 states use no-fault or choice systems where your own PIP pays your injuries first. The rest follow at-fault rules.

    What is SR-22?

An SR-22 is a certificate your insurer files to prove you carry required coverage after a DUI or serious violation. Florida and Virginia also use the FR-44.

      Frequently asked questions

Are these real car insurance quotes?

No. carinsurance-near.com is not an insurance company or agency and never gives quotes. Every figure is an estimate modeled from public data so you can compare places, cars and coverage levels before you shop.

Where does the data come from?

State average premiums come from the NAIC Auto Insurance Database Report; minimum coverage rules from state insurance departments; vehicle loss data from IIHS-HLDI; vehicle details and safety ratings from NHTSA and fueleconomy.gov; local data from the U.S. Census Bureau and FEMA's National Risk Index.

Why do car insurance rates differ by ZIP code?

Insurers price by territory. Areas with denser traffic, longer commutes, more theft or more severe weather produce more and costlier claims, so premiums there are higher even for identical drivers and cars.

How often do state minimum coverage requirements change?

Only occasionally. Minimums are set by each state legislature, and changes usually raise liability limits to keep pace with medical and repair costs. We check every state's rules against its insurance department and update our data when a change takes effect.

      What does 30/60/25 mean?

It is shorthand for minimum liability limits: $30,000 bodily injury per person, $60,000 bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 property damage. Each state sets its own numbers.

Is full coverage required by law?

No state requires collision or comprehensive coverage. But lenders and leasing companies almost always require both until the car is paid off.

      How accurate are the estimates?

They reflect typical drivers and published averages, so your actual price can be higher or lower, sometimes by a lot. Use them to compare options and set expectations, then get real quotes from licensed insurers or agents.
